The kitchen got a new little table from Ikea.

I really like it. Its small, stable, and matches the chunkiness of the molding. A great little table overall - especially for two.
I really hate to break away from vintage with furniture and especially hate when someone goes "Oh that's from IKEA!" Sometimes you got to admit that the big yellow and blue has well priced solutions for everyday living. If I find something better I'll just use this table for the patio.
The kitchen also needs window coverings and I want to restore and recover my pair of Knoll executive armless chairs. The foam is falling apart and the original fabric is stained and worn out. What color though? I kind of dig the orange...
Should I do long curtains, roller blinds, or maybe a half curtain by the table and above the sink? Choices, choices. Window coverings have always given me LOTS of trouble.
We also started painting all the vents (this one is in the kitchen). They all looked pretty shabby after the new white paint so we used Rustoleum white high gloss spray paint. It makes a subtle but HUGE difference. The spaces feel cleaner and a lot more finished with that little touch.

LOVE those orange Saarinen chairs. They are the perfect little daub of color there!
love the orange on the chairs. i was just at the knoll showroom in santa monica and saw some fun colorful fabrics. you should phone their textiles department and have them send you some orange swatches. their prices (for fabric) seemed reasonable. i personally think a simple roman shade would looke good above the table. maybe a texturey white linen?
i think a roman shade is the way to go as well. now i just need to find a cheap one - and one to match above the sink.
i checked out the textiles on the knoll website a few years ago when i was thinking of reupholstering. it would be an investment, but worth it.
just another project to add to the list. waa waaa.
okay, so:
yay, i am with you on loving the orange of the chairs. it definitely keeps with the vintage look of their era, and the color really pops on that bright white space.
about the shades...don't go roman! yikes, how boring (sorry, other commenters), and you certainly don't want to go too white...
have you checked out the tortoise bamboo bind selection at Pearl River? cause that is my vote. not only would a freckly bamboo compliment the orange color of the chairs, it'd bring a bit of texture and "travel" to that little space without going overboard with yards of curtain or remaining too minimal-modern by using some neutral, future-material...you know what i mean?
anyway, that's exactly what i'd do with the space. i love the simplicity and sturdiness of the ikea table, i think the bamboo shade would do wonders and i'd absolutely keep the chairs dressed in some kind of orange upholstery. accent with some vintage gold bulls on the table, or some paint by numbers on the walls, or even just a simple grid of polaroids framed in a Ribba...but really you've got something great going on here...
hooray!
loving your orange chairs. they seem so right for your kitchen. i agree, when it is time to reupholster, stick with the orange.
as for the window treatment, i would go with a printed roman shade. a print, or even a stripe? charcoal gray and white skinny horizontal stripes would look great in there. there's my two cents.
Just say NO to bamboo shades. They are so 2000. Had to put that out there.
I just discovered your blog- and I LOVE it. Like your style, but more importantly- you're hilarious.
RE: all the vents.
I have a friend who recently bought a house with a huge vent in the middle of one focal wall. She bought a huge frame, painted it a bright blue, and framed the whole vent. From eyesore to pop art in an instant. Brilliant!
